Muy interesante investigación de Reuters sobre el patrimonio del líder supremo de Irán, el ayatola Ali Khamenei (*). (Después de la impactante investigación sobre la riqueza del liderazgo chino llevada adelante por Bloomberg, parece que Reuters no quiere quedarse atrás). Según el estudio, que llevó seis meses completar, el buen ayatola controla cerca de US$95 billion, de los cuales $52bn provienen de propiedades y $43bn de tenencias en compañías de finanzas, petróleo y telecomunicaciones.

Lo más interesante del artículo es la referencia al uso del sistema 'judicial' de Irán para llegar a esta extraordinaria fortuna:

The Reuters investigation, which is detailed in a three-part series, documents how Setad [el 'vehículo'] has amassed a giant portfolio of real estate by claiming in Iranian courts, sometimes falsely, that the properties are abandoned. The organization now holds a court-ordered monopoly on taking property in the name of the supreme leader, and regularly sells the seized properties at auction or seeks to extract payments from the original owners.

Setad has built its empire on the systematic seizure of thousands of properties belonging to ordinary Iranians. The supreme leader, judges and parliament over the years have issued a series of bureaucratic edicts, constitutional interpretations and judicial decisions bolstering Setad. No supervisory organization can question its property.

Damas y caballeros: he aquí la idea de los contrapesos institucionales (o de la falta de contrapesos) en acción. El ejecutivo controla el judicial; en consecuencia, la puerta queda abierta al saqueo. Es una verdad universal.
